Workstation

The Workstation feature offers users a platform to create, manage, and monitor workstations. It includes capabilities for file management, request approval workflows, resource monitoring, lifecycle management, cost tracking, and event logging. Below is an overview of each component of the Workstation feature.

Supported Workstation Types

  • The platform supports both Windows Workstations and Linux Workstations, allowing users to choose the operating system that best suits their needs.
  • Navigate to TRE and click on the Workstation tab.
  • Click on the Add New button and select the appropriate image to create a workstation.
  • Provide the necessary details, such as the workstation name and resource capacity (e.g., CPU, memory, disk size).
  • After submitting, the request is sent for admin approval.
  • Once the admin approves the request, the workstation moves to an Approved state.
  • The user must then launch the workstation.
  • After launching, the workstation status changes to Running, indicating it is fully operational.
  • Users can also Change the instance type ✏️ after workstation creation if needed.

Changing the Instance Type

  • Click on the Workstation tab to view the list of available workstations.
  • Select the workstation you want to modify.
  • A right-side panel will open displaying the workstation details.
  • Under the Summary tab, locate the pencil (edit) icon next to the instance type.
  • Click the pencil icon to change the instance type.
  • Select the new instance type from the available options.
  • Once updated, the workstation will reflect the new instance type.

Starting/Stopping a Workstation

  • Users can manually start or stop their workstation from the interface.
  • This allows for flexible control over when the workstation is active.

Request Management

  • Admin Request Management

  • Admins receive notifications for workstation-related requests, such as creation or file downloads.
  • The Admin can approve or reject requests, ensuring proper oversight.

  • Approval of File Downloads

  • When users request to download a file, a download request is sent to the admin.
  • Admins can approve/disapprove from Request Menu under Admin app
  • The admin must approve the request before the user can access the file.

Summary Tab

The Summary tab provides an overview of the workstation's details, including:

  • Total Runtime – Displays the total duration the workstation has been active.
  • Cost – Shows the estimated or actual cost incurred for using the workstation.
  • Configuration Details – Provides information about the workstation setup, including allocated resources like CPU, RAM.

File Management

Data Tab - File Uploads

  • Users can create folders and upload data files under the Data tab.
  • Uploaded data is organized within user-defined folders, making it easy to manage project-related data.

Results Tab - File Access

  • output files from Workstation can be viewed under the Results tab.
  • This is designed for accessing data outputs, allowing users to download or review results generated by their workstation.

Resource Monitoring

Monitoring Tab

  • Users can monitor their workstation's resource usage through the Monitoring tab.
  • This provides detailed metrics on CPU usage, memory, disk space, and other relevant performance statistics.
  • Real-time monitoring helps users optimize resource consumption and manage workloads efficiently.

Lifecycle Management

Creating and Managing Lifecycles

  • Users have the ability to define lifecycles for their workstations.
  • Lifecycles allow user to automate events such as starting or stopping a workstation based on predefined schedules or conditions.
  • This feature aids in automating routine tasks and improving efficiency.

Cost Tracking

Cost Chart

  • The Cost Chart feature provides users with detailed insights into the cost associated with their workstation usage.
  • Users can view daily, weekly, or monthly cost breakdowns based on resource consumption.
  • The chart also includes cost estimations for specific configurations, helping users manage budgets effectively.

Event Tracking

Event Log

  • The Event Log automatically records all workstation-related activities.
  • Events such as workstation creation, running, starting, stopping, and termination are logged for tracking purposes.
  • Each event includes a timestamp, user information, and status updates for transparency.
  • Users can access the event log to view the history of their workstation activities.
  • Admins can use the log for auditing and troubleshooting purposes.

Conclusion

The Workstation feature is a powerful tool that gives users full control over their working environments, with necessary admin oversight. It streamlines the management of workstations, files, and resources, while providing a user-friendly interface for lifecycle automation, cost tracking, event logging, and resource monitoring. This feature ensures a smooth, efficient, and secure working environment for users.
